Calcium Reactors provide an efficient way for your reef aquarium to get the necessary mineral and trace elements that your corals need to grow and flourish. A key benefit of having a calcium reactor is that it will dose the tank for you so you won't have to. They will improve your tank's conditions by providing a constant supplementation of calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, and strontium. They also provide carbon dioxide (CO2) for the corals to photosynthesize more efficiently. It is highly recommended to have a calcium reactor with reef systems that contain a large number of SPS corals and clams.

Kalwasser Reactors are very nice alternatives to calcium reactors. These reactors use kalkwasser or lime water to sustain calcium, alkalinity, and pH levels in the aquarium. It utilizes an airtight chamber partially filled with kalkwasser that is constantly fed water from a reservoir. A pump or stirrer keeps the water in the reactor saturated by periodically stirring the kalkwasser. Unlike the calcium reactor, kalkwasser reactors do no use the aquarium's water for the reaction. It is fed water through a dosing pump from a container of fresh or top-off water, and saturates it with the dissolved kalkwasser. That saturated mix is then supplied to the tank as top-off water as your tank evaporates water.
